Spring 1897: War Films
The first screening of a film in Greece – in Athens in the spring – met with a decidedly mixed response: some members of the audience are reported to have fainted, while others threw stones at the screen.
The first film to be made in Greece was during the country's brief war with Turkey, and was shot by amateur cameraman Frederic Villiers. The British war correspondent shot footage of the fighting at Velestino, but later claimed he was unable to sell the films in the face of competition from the wholly staged films made of the same incident by Georges Melies.
