1897: Tunisia's First Screening
Albert Samama Chikly (Chikly is possibly a nickname derived from a band of men known as the Firemen of the Island of Chikly) was a Tunisian Jew who, in addition to introducing such scientific novelties as X-rays, radio and the bicycle, organised the first screening of films in Tunisia in a Tunis shop on rue Es-Sadika in this year with a photographer named Solis. The screening, which lasted for twelve minutes, was combined with a magic lantern show, and was comprised of such well known films as Sortie de l’Usines and L’Arrivée d’un Train. [ADD].
