1/7/1897: A Sound Idea

Francois Dussaud

On the 1st of July 1897, Swiss inventor Francois Dussaud, George E. Jaubert, professor of physics at the Ecole polytechnique, and L.A. Berton, an engineer and administrator at the Societe Industrielle des Telephones, patented a system that linked Dussaudís microphonograph, a system for recording and reproducing sound, and Jaubert and Bertonís motion picture device to produce a machine capable of making movies with sound.   On the 13th of July, Dussaud and Jaubert formed the Societe du Phonorama with Eugene Pereire, director of the Compagnie Generale Transatlantique.   The Societe was named after the new invention it was created to promote.
